INTRODUCTION
PRESIDENT'S ADDRESS
It is my honour to have been elected as your president for 2024-2025. I am extremely grateful for the trust you have placed in me, and thank you once more for putting your faith in the present EXCO to lead RLS in the year ahead.
As RLS heads into its second year of existence, the new EXCO of 2024-2025 has planned for RLS a slew of exciting initiatives, as part of an effort to bring RLS closer to its raison d'être as a nascent student interest group centred around the law.
A true student interest group furnishes a platform for its members to express their knowledge and curiosity in various areas. As such, we will seek to start regular sessions for members to present on various areas of the law to RLS.
A true student interest group provides plentiful opportunities for members to challenge themselves and grow. In this vein, we will seek to hold competitions and mock-moots to allow members to develop their cognitive abilities.
Lastly, but definitely not least, a true student interest group is bonded and close-knit. Through our planned regular sessions and other avenues for intra-club interaction, we hope to allow members to get to know one another more. We also have planned a series of bonding sessions, including games and film screenings, to allow members to forge interpersonal connections, thus bringing RLS closer together as a community.
Underpinning these developments in RLS is a system of decision-making indubitably centred around democracy, where members have a say in major decisions affecting them. We firmly believe that intrinsic motivation is most effectively driven by one’s stake in making decisions, and that members will be more interested and participative in initiatives that they support, and changes that they decide.
But of course, RLS could not be where we are today without the consistent partnerships we have fostered with other local law societies; collaborations with the Hwa Chong Law Society, Dunman High School Law Society, and the SMU Constitutional Law and Criminal Justice Club have been integral to members’ growth and knowledge of the law. We hope to seek continued collaborations moving forward, and thank the aforementioned law societies for their generosity and partnership.
It is through these initiatives that I hope RLS can grow to become even more beneficial to you, and to become a community valued by you, not just for the cognitive development it provides, but for the society it renders. I, along with my EXCO, am immeasurably thrilled by what lies ahead for RLS, and I wish for your support as RLS progresses to a new chapter in our history.
Yours,
Li Houzhe
President of Raffles Law Society, 2024-2025
